🔧 Project Overview

This project showcases the design and development of an innovative machine that transforms waste plastic bottles into high-quality 3D printing filament. With the growing environmental threat posed by plastic waste, this solution offers a sustainable, cost-effective, and technically sound alternative that supports the circular economy. By converting PET, HDPE, and PP bottles into usable 1.75 mm filament, the machine merges mechanical engineering, electronics, and environmental consciousness to help reshape how we treat plastic waste.

🎯 Objectives

  • Produce Premium Filament (1.75 mm) from plastic waste with mechanical properties suitable for 3D printing.
  • Design a Safe & User-Friendly Machine for hobbyists, educators, and small-scale manufacturers.
  • Reduce Material Costs through plastic recycling.
  • Ensure Scalability & Versatility, supporting various plastic types and use cases.

⚙️ How It Works

The machine follows a 4-stage processing system:

  1. Material Preparation (Strip Cutting): Bottles are softened using a heat gun for easier processing and cut into long, flexible plastic strips.
  2. Extrusion: Strips are melted inside an extruder at ~220°C (PET). Uses a Creality-compatible hotend with a 0.4mm brass nozzle. Frame built with aluminum and stainless steel for heat resistance and durability.
  3. Cooling: Molten filament is passed through a water bath and cooled using a fan system to solidify and maintain diameter.
  4. Spooling: A 12V DC gear motor (10–60 RPM) winds the filament with constant tension using a PWM speed controller for precision.

  • Temperature Control: W1209 Thermostat Module (−50°C to 110°C)
  • Motor Speed Regulation: DC Motor PWM Controller
  • Power Supply: 12V 10A AC/DC Converter
  • Mechanical Framework: Modular, durable design for long-term operation

  • Achieved consistent 1.75 mm filament diameter with strong tensile and flexible properties.
  • Successfully printed models using the recycled filament, validating performance.
  • Demonstrated a low-cost, scalable solution to repurpose plastic waste for additive manufacturing.
